Mykolayiv on the map of Ukraine
Mykolayiv region is situated on the rich lands of southern Ukraine and it lies on more than 24 600 sq.km. In the north, east and west Mykolayiv region borders upon Kherson, Odessa, Kirovograd, and Dnepropetrovsk regions, and in the south it is washed by the waters of the Black Sea.
Administratively the region is divided into 19 districts and has population of more then 1.32 mln. people, including representatives of over 100 nationalities: Ukrainians, Russians, Moldavians, Bulgarians, Jews, Greeks, Poles, Germans etc.
Mineral raw materials on the territory of Mykolayiv region are represented by great reserves of building materials: granites of different colors, building stone, materials for cement manufacturing, rubble stone and road-metal, as well as carbonates and clay material.
The favorable factors of Mykolayiv region’s economic and geographical location is the proximity to the industrial centers of Donetsk-Dneprovskyy region and outlet to the Black Sea. It is one of the most relevant factors of port economy, sea transport of national and international importance, and recreational economy development.
Mykolayiv, the administrative center of Mykolayiv region, is situated in about 600 km south-east from Kiev, 150 km from Odessa and 80 km from the Black Sea, in the place of Sothern Bug and Ingul junction.
Today the city population takes the 7th place in the country; according to the population census of 2001 it is inhabited by 514,4 thousand people.
The town performs a wide range of functions: administrative, organisational, economical, and cultural.
The total area of municipal acres is 25,3 thousand hectares, the total spread of streets, thoroughfares, and embankments is 960 km.
Mykolayiv is divided into administrative and territorial units - administrative districts, which have their borders, territory and names: Zavodskiy district, Korabelniy district, Leninskiy district and Zentralniy district. They are created with the purpose of convenient service of material and natural city complexes. Borders, configuration and sizes of Mykolayiv districts are defined taking into account their historical, geographical and town-planning peculiarities, population, economic characteristics, presence of engineering infrastructure and the condition of city environment. Each city district is divided into microdistricts that are determined according to social and town-planning characteristics.
